Cow and calf together. Clementine has been raising her calf Collette all summer and the project has been wonderful. Every time Topher and I talk about this new system, or our ideas for taking it foward we both light up with excitement. We enjoy looking into the future and thinking about the changes and improvements this would bring to our dairy herd and farm – in terms of health, productivity, profitability, and quality of life.
In the short term, one of the things that I like best about the project is simply watching the two of them spend time together. Laying together in the pasture, walking together down the cow road. They are a beautiful pair. We are planning this winter to raise a few more calves like this – keeping them with their mothers and letting them nurse for the entire lactation.
