A few weeks ago I had a visitor staying with me – my parent’s new puppy. She is 1/2 black poodle and 1/2 golden retriever (you can see the black poodle part dominates). She is just 3 months old, and named Charlie. I was hesitant about how she would react to the cows, and how they would react to her. Yesterday I cautiously brought her back to the beef cows who were grazing behind the barn around the pond. They were very intrigued by her and approached her steadily. She didn’t know what to think – just sat there watching them close in. She would glance up at me and then back to them, but didn’t show any fear or aggression. Eventually they got close and began to sniff her and then lick her face. We spent a while with the beef cows, allowing them to get comfortable with Charlie, and her with them. Next we went to visit the heifers, which resulted in a similar interaction. At first the heifers were noticeably nervous, but they were also very interested in this small furry creature, and promptly approached her with curiosity and playfulness.
